Lumber production at Mercer International declined in the fourth quarter of 2025 as limited log availability continued to affect the company\u2019s solid wood division. Reduced fibre supply and seasonal production slowdowns weighed on output during the period.<\/p>\n

According to the company\u2019s latest results, lumber production in the fourth quarter reached 108.6 million board feet, about 5% lower than in the same period of 2024. Sales volumes fell more sharply, declining to 103 million board feet, reflecting both lower production and the timing of shipments.<\/p>\n

Despite the drop in volumes, average lumber sales prices increased. Mercer reported an average realised price of $533 per thousand board feet, up around 12% year-on-year. The United States remained the largest market for the company\u2019s lumber sales, accounting for about 44% of revenues, while most of the remaining volumes were sold in Europe.<\/p>\n

Higher fibre costs continued to weigh on the company\u2019s solid wood division. Mercer said per-unit fibre costs for lumber production increased by about 33% compared with the fourth quarter of 2024, reflecting tight log supply in both Germany and Canada. Fibre costs represented roughly 80% of the cash cost of production in the lumber segment.<\/p>\n

As a result, the solid wood division remained under pressure. Segment operating EBITDA declined to negative $10.8 million, compared with negative $4.7 million in the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n

Total revenues from the division remained relatively stable at about $110 million, as higher revenues from manufactured wood products partially offset weaker lumber and biofuel sales.<\/p>\n

Mercer reported stronger activity in its engineered wood products business. Revenues from manufactured wood products, including cross-laminated timber and glulam, increased during the quarter as several projects were delivered and the order book for mass timber construction expanded.<\/p>\n

To improve profitability, the company has been implementing a cost-reduction programme known as \u201cOne Goal One Hundred\u201d, which aims to deliver $100 million in savings and operational improvements by 2026.
