Weaker construction markets across Europe and rising sawlog prices have increased pressure on producers, accelerating consolidation among the largest operators.

Two developments in particular have had a direct impact on the ranking of Europe’s largest sawmill companies. The insolvency of Germany’s Ziegler Group and the subsequent acquisition of major assets by Rettenmeier Holding significantly altered the structure of the German sawmilling sector. At the same time, HS Timber Group rebuilt its production base through acquisitions in Northern Europe and a greenfield investment in South America after a period of retrenchment in Romania.

The acquisition of BSW Timber by Austria’s Binderholz also strengthened the position of the leading producer, while a series of Nordic transactions reshaped HS Timber’s industrial footprint. As a result, the ranking of the largest European sawmill groups in 2025 has changed considerably.

Rank

Company

Estimated lumber capacity

1

Binderholz

~4.5 million m³

2

Stora Enso

~4.1–4.4 million m³

3

HS Timber Group

~4.0 million m³

4

Rettenmeier

~3.0–3.1 million m³

5

Pfeifer Group

~2.7–3.0 million m³

6

Mayr-Melnhof Holz

~2.0–2.3 million m³

7

Moelven Industrier

~2.0 million m³

8

Södra Wood

~1.8–2.0 million m³

9

Vida AB

~1.5–1.6 million m³

10

SCA Wood

~1.0–1.2 million m³

Binderholz

Austria’s Binderholz remains the largest sawmill group in Europe with estimated lumber production capacity of around 4.5 million cubic metres annually. The company consolidated its leading position through the acquisition of the UK-based BSW Timber group, a deal that brought several large British sawmills into the Binderholz network and significantly expanded its production footprint.

Binderholz operates large sawmills across Austria, Germany, Finland and the United Kingdom. Alongside these operations the company has continued to expand downstream processing including cross-laminated timber, glulam and pellet production, integrating higher-value products with its core sawmilling activities.

Stora Enso

Stora Enso ranks second among European producers, with annual lumber production slightly above four million cubic metres from sawmills located mainly in Sweden, Finland and the Baltic region.

The Finnish-Swedish forest industry group has recently initiated a strategic review of several Central European sawmills and parts of its building solutions division. The move reflects a broader reassessment of the wood products business as the company increasingly focuses on packaging materials and other bio-based products.

HS Timber Group

HS Timber Group occupies the third position after rebuilding and expanding its production base during the past three years.

After a period of retrenchment marked by shutdowns and asset sales in Romania, the Austrian-based group expanded through acquisitions in Northern Europe and through new international investments. The company’s largest European site remains the Kodersdorf sawmill in Germany with annual capacity of about 720,000 cubic metres.

The group expanded significantly in the Nordic and Baltic regions through several acquisitions. In Finland, the Luvia sawmill contributes roughly 400,000 cubic metres annually. In Latvia, the operations in Talsi and Ventspils add approximately 550,000 cubic metres of capacity, while the Malå sawmill in Sweden contributes about 340,000 cubic metres per year.

Outside Europe, HS Timber has commissioned the Acon Timber sawmill in Virasoro, Argentina, which currently produces around 370,000 cubic metres of dry lumber annually. The investment gives the company access to plantation-grown pine resources and export-oriented markets in South America.

Together these acquisitions and investments have created a geographically diversified production network spanning Central Europe, Scandinavia, the Baltic region and South America, lifting HS Timber’s total lumber capacity to around four million cubic metres per year.

Rettenmeier

Rettenmeier Holding moved into the upper tier of European sawmill groups following the collapse of Germany’s Ziegler Group in late 2024.

In 2025 the German company acquired major parts of Ziegler’s wood-processing operations, including the large sawmill complex in Plößberg in Bavaria, one of the largest sawmills in Europe. The acquisition significantly expanded Rettenmeier’s industrial base and lifted its lumber production capacity to slightly above three million cubic metres annually.

The deal also preserved a large part of Ziegler’s industrial operations in Bavaria and reshaped the structure of the German sawmilling sector.

Pfeifer Group

Austria’s Pfeifer Group ranks among the next tier of large European producers with production capacity approaching three million cubic metres annually.

The company has continued to expand its sawmilling operations in Central and Northern Europe, including investments in Finland and Germany. In parallel, Pfeifer has strengthened its pellet production and bioenergy activities, integrating these operations closely with its sawmill network.

Mayr-Melnhof Holz

Mayr-Melnhof Holz remains another major Austrian producer with large sawmills in Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.

The company has increasingly focused on engineered wood products such as glulam beams and cross-laminated timber used in structural construction. The integration of sawmilling and engineered wood production allows the group to participate directly in the expanding timber construction market.

Moelven Industrier

Norway-based Moelven Industrier operates a network of sawmills across Norway and Sweden with combined production of roughly two million cubic metres annually.

The company has developed strong downstream activities in timber construction, particularly in glulam beams and modular building systems, linking its sawmilling operations with construction markets in Scandinavia.

Södra Wood

Södra Wood forms part of the Swedish forest-owner cooperative Södra and operates several large sawmills in southern Sweden.

The cooperative structure provides stable raw-material supply from thousands of member forest owners. Södra exports significant volumes of lumber to Europe, North America and Asia and remains one of the largest exporters of Scandinavian softwood lumber.

Vida AB

Vida AB is the largest privately owned sawmill group in Sweden and exports the majority of its lumber production to international markets.

The company operates several large sawmills in southern Sweden and supplies markets across Europe, North America and Asia. Vida has focused primarily on efficiency improvements and export growth rather than large acquisitions.

SCA Wood

SCA Wood completes the top ten ranking. The Swedish forest industry group combines sawmilling with one of Europe’s largest privately owned forest holdings, controlling approximately 2.6 million hectares of forest in northern Sweden.

This extensive forest base provides a secure raw-material supply for its sawmills and underpins the company’s long-term position in the Scandinavian timber market.

[1

post-98145","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
