Germany\u2019s softwood lumber exports declined in 2025 mainly due to weaker deliveries to European markets, while shipments to the United States increased sharply and partly offset the drop.<\/p>\n

Total exports reached 7,3 million m3 in 2025 (year to date), down 10% from 8,1 million m3 in 2024. The European Union absorbed 3,6 million m3, a decrease of 14% year-on-year, reducing its share of Germany\u2019s total export volume to around 49%. Several key EU destinations recorded lower volumes, including Austria (\u201317%), France (\u201313%), Belgium (\u201323%), Poland (\u201321%), Italy (\u201314%) and Spain (\u201316%). The United Kingdom was a notable exception, with volumes rising 13%.<\/p>\n

In contrast, North America expanded strongly. Exports to the region increased 16% to 2,3 million m3, representing about 32% of total shipments. The United States alone imported 2,2 million m3, up 20% compared with 2024, consolidating its position as Germany\u2019s largest single export market. Shipments to Canada declined 29%, but this was more than compensated by US growth.<\/p>\n

Outside Europe and North America, performance was mixed. Exports to Other Asian countries fell 30% to 0,9 million m3, largely driven by a 69% collapse in shipments to China. India declined 36%, while Japan increased 8% and Pakistan rose 33%. Near and Middle Eastern markets contracted 19%, although Saudi Arabia posted a 7% increase. North Africa fell 16% overall, despite a strong 142% rise in exports to Morocco.<\/p>\n

Despite the overall decline in volume, export value increased by 4% to \u20ac2,03 billion (2024: \u20ac1,95 billion). As a result, the average export price rose from approximately \u20ac240\/m3 in 2024 to around \u20ac276\/m3 in 2025, an increase of about 15%. Value growth was particularly strong in the United States, where export revenues climbed 35% to \u20ac631 million.<\/p>\n
