Finland\u2019s plywood exports showed a clear rebound in the third quarter of 2025, pointing to improving conditions in selected foreign markets after a prolonged period of volatility. However, cumulative exports for the January\u2013October period remained well below the previous year\u2019s level, underlining that the recovery remains uneven and heavily dependent on developments outside Europe.<\/p>\n
In Q3 2025, plywood exports increased 9% year on year to \u20ac106.1 million, compared with \u20ac97.5 million in the same period of 2024. The rebound was driven by stronger demand from Germany, North America and several Asian destinations, indicating that Finnish producers are regaining market access in parts of the global plywood market after earlier declines.<\/p>\n
The European Union remained the dominant destination, accounting for just over 80% of total plywood exports in the quarter. Within the EU, Germany stood out as the main growth market, with export values rising 27% to \u20ac24.6 million, lifting its share of total Finnish plywood exports. Shipments to the Netherlands and Denmark also increased, while exports to the United Kingdom and Sweden declined, highlighting continued weakness in some traditional Northern European markets.<\/p>\n
Outside the EU, market developments were more dynamic. Exports to North America more than tripled year on year in Q3, albeit from a low base, while shipments to Asian markets increased sharply. Strong growth in South Korea and China more than offset a steep decline in exports to Japan, reflecting shifting demand patterns within Asia. Deliveries to Oceania also rose, supported by higher shipments to Australia.<\/p>\n
Despite the stronger third-quarter performance, the broader picture for January\u2013October 2025 remains negative. Total plywood exports for the period declined 13% year on year to \u20ac313.2 million, down from \u20ac360.8 million in the same period of 2024. The contraction was largely driven by weaker demand in the EU market, where exports fell 17%, with all major destinations recording lower values.<\/p>\n
Exports outside the EU provided partial support. Shipments to North America increased nearly 40% year on year over the first ten months, while exports to Asian destinations rose 11%, led by continued growth in South Korea and China. Deliveries to Oceania more than doubled, although volumes remained relatively small compared with European markets.<\/p>\n
Market participants note that Finnish plywood producers have recently been able to strengthen their position in selected overseas markets, supported by stable supply chains and competitive positioning relative to other Northern European suppliers. At the same time, demand conditions in downstream sectors such as construction and furniture manufacturing remain mixed, particularly in Europe, limiting the pace of recovery.<\/p>\n
Overall, the data point to a two-speed market for Finnish plywood exports: a short-term rebound in Q3 driven by non-European demand and Germany, set against a still weak year-to-date performance dominated by subdued European markets. Whether the recent improvement can be sustained into 2026 will depend on the durability of demand outside the EU and any stabilisation in core European construction markets.<\/p>\n
