Weyerhaeuser reported a significant rise in third-quarter profit, driven by higher sales and a recovery in its timberlands and real estate segments. For the quarter ended September 30, Weyerhaeuser\u2019s net sales increased over 2% to $1.72 billion. Adjusted core profit from the timberlands segment rose to $148 million, compared with $122 million a year earlier, while the real estate unit saw its adjusted profit jump more than 18% to $91 million. Overall, the company reported a net profit of $80 million, or 11 cents per share, compared with $28 million, or 4 cents per share, in the same period last year.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s performance has been supported by a recovery in housing activity, amid hopes that easing mortgage rates will stimulate demand for new construction. Additionally, the 10% tariffs imposed on imported timber and lumber by the Trump administration have provided a pricing advantage for U.S.-based timber producers like Weyerhaeuser.<\/p>\n
Timberlands acquisitions and divestitures<\/strong><\/p>\n Weyerhaeuser completed two timberland acquisitions in Q3 totaling $459 million. The largest of these was 117,000 acres in North Carolina and Virginia purchased for $364 million. The second was 10,000 acres of mature, low-elevation timberlands in Washington for $95 million, located adjacent to existing company holdings with access to mills and export yards.<\/p>\n In parallel, the company advanced three divestiture packages of non-core timberlands, collectively worth $410 million.
