Latvia will host the annual Nordic Wood Industry Forum on October 9, marking the 25th anniversary of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation. The event will bring together representatives of the forest sector from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Finland and Norway to discuss the role of the wood industry in strengthening European resilience.<\/p>\n
Within the framework of the forum, participants from six countries will sign a memorandum of understanding outlining cooperation goals for the next five years.<\/p>\n
The Latvian timber industry plays a vital role in the national economy \u2014 its annual contribution equals roughly two years of defense spending. However, the proximity of Russia remains a risk factor for investment and long-term development. The forum will explore how the industry, with state support, can reinforce economic stability, independence and defense capacity, while ensuring the secure supply of critical materials and contributing to civil defense and crisis preparedness.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe forest sector is a key part of the Nordic and Baltic bioeconomy, employing more than 350,000 people. It provides renewable, reusable and recyclable alternatives to fossil resources, reducing external dependence and supporting strategic autonomy,\u201d said Art\u016brs Bukonts, Executive Director of the Latvian Wood Industry Federation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 2024, the export value of our forest sector reached \u20ac3.44 billion. This strong economic foundation allows us to build a secure future for Latvia \u2014 and, together with our regional partners, for Europe as well,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The forum will gather national wood industry representatives including Henrik V\u00e4lja (Estonian Forest and Timber Association), Algis Gai\u017eutis (Lithuanian Forest and Landowners Association), Heidi Finstad (Norwegian Wood Industry), Viveka Beckeman (Swedish Forest Industries Federation), and Paula Lehtom\u00e4ki (Finnish Forest Industries Federation).<\/p>\n
Also attending are Latvian Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Artjoms Ur\u0161u\u013cskis, Director of the Forest Department \u0100ris Jansons, and Uldis Bi\u0137is, Chairman of the Council at AS Latvijas Finieris, alongside other officials and industry representatives.<\/p>\n
On October 10, participants will visit the Z\u0101baki tree nursery, which features a new wooden building complex unique in the Baltics. The visit will include a look at the seedling cooler, a controlled facility where forest seedlings are stored at low temperatures to maintain quality and viability before planting.<\/p>\n
