President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on wood-derived goods, targeting imports of furniture and related products. The measures include a 50% tariff on all kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, set to take effect on October 1.<\/p>\n
Trump said the decision was based on national security concerns and aimed at protecting U.S. manufacturing. \u201cThe reason for this is the large-scale flooding of these products into the United States by other outside countries,\u201d he wrote in a social post. \u201cIt is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for national security and other reasons, our manufacturing process.\u201d<\/p>\n
The new measures also extend beyond furniture, covering branded drugs and heavy-duty trucks. It is not yet clear whether the tariffs will be added on top of existing duties announced earlier this year.<\/p>\n
According to Furniture Today<\/em> research cited by Reuters, U.S. furniture imports reached $25.5 billion in 2024, up 7% from the year before, with about 60% coming from Vietnam and China.<\/p>\n Shares of several major home furniture retailers, including Wayfair, Williams Sonoma, and RH, fell on Thursday following the announcement.<\/p>\n German industry calls for EU action<\/strong><\/p>\n The Association of the German Furniture Industry urged the European Commission to act after the U.S. tariff announcement, arguing that the measures breach existing trade agreements.<\/p>\n \u201cThe current EU-U.S. tariff agreement limits duties on European imports to 15%,\u201d managing director Jan Kurth said, calling on Brussels to ensure the commitment is upheld.<\/p>\n German kitchen furniture exports to the U.S. dropped 17.4% year-on-year to about \u20ac26 million between January and July 2025, following a 13% increase to \u20ac50 million over the same period in 2024. Exports of upholstered furniture rose modestly by 2.5% to just under \u20ac12 million in the same period.<\/p>\n In an August survey, 80% of German kitchen furniture manufacturers said they expect further export losses if Washington follows through with the tariffs.<\/p>\n Political and trade context<\/strong><\/p>\n The proposed measures are linked to the Commerce Department\u2019s ongoing Section 232 investigation under the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, which covers timber, lumber, and wood products, including furniture.
