Stora Enso has completed the divestment of 175,000 hectares of forest land in Sweden, finalising a transaction with an enterprise value of around \u20ac900 million. The sale represents just over 12% of the company\u2019s Swedish forest holdings.<\/p>\n
The buyers are Soya Group, which now controls a 40.6% stake in the newly formed company, and a consortium led by MEAG, the asset management arm of German insurer Munich Re, which holds 44.4%. Stora Enso will retain a 15% minority stake. Following the deal, the forestry and packaging group continues to own more than 1.2 million hectares of forest in Sweden.<\/p>\n
The company said the transaction supports its strategy of optimising its forest portfolio while maintaining significant ownership in Swedish forest land, which is considered a stable long-term asset.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Stora Enso announced the launch of change negotiations at its Imatra mills in eastern Finland. The talks will cover 923 employees and could result in a maximum of 61 layoffs. Negotiations are set to begin on 7 October and are expected to run for six weeks.<\/p>\n
The company said the move is aimed at improving competitiveness and efficiency in the face of weak and unstable market demand, which it linked to ongoing macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n
Janne Kallio, Director of the Imatra Business Unit, noted that the competitiveness and financial situation of the Imatra factories require efficiency measures. \u201cThe news about the change negotiations has certainly come as a surprise to the staff,\u201d he said, adding that the company is looking for ways to secure the future performance of the mills.<\/p>\n
The Imatra complex, consisting of the Kaukop\u00e4\u00e4 and Tainionkoski mills, is one of Stora Enso\u2019s largest production sites. It produces chemical pulp and consumer board, key products for the company\u2019s packaging division.
