Brazil\u2019s wood industry is facing a severe downturn after the United States imposed new tariffs on multiple imported products, including wood, on July 9. The U.S. is Brazil\u2019s largest export market for wood products, accounting for around USD 1.6 billion in 2024\u2014roughly half of Brazil\u2019s total production. Some product categories were almost entirely dependent on U.S. buyers.<\/p>\n
The tariffs are now threatening an estimated 180,000 direct jobs across Brazil\u2019s wood sector. Cancellations of contracts and a frozen market have already forced some companies to halt operations, while others have put part or all of their workforce on collective leave because goods originally destined for the U.S. have no buyers. Several local governments are attempting to ease the situation by introducing tax cuts and expanding credit facilities.<\/p>\n
The impact has also spread to China. In July, Brazilian wood exports to China dropped sharply by 60.4% compared to June, even as import prices rose by 19.4% month-on-month. With Brazilian mills reducing or suspending production to deal with the U.S. situation, shipments to China have slowed or, in some cases, been temporarily interrupted. Traders may also hesitate to place new orders under such uncertain conditions, leading to further disruptions in trade flows.<\/p>\n
Price volatility has followed. By the end of August, domestic Brazilian log prices had increased by 4.5%\u20135.8%, while sawnwood prices rose by 5.3%\u201310.8%. Multiple tropical hardwoods, including ipe, jatoba, bloodwood, tigerwood, cumaru, and mixed red and white species, recorded price increases.<\/p>\n
It remains unclear when Brazilian factories will resume normal operations or whether the U.S. will reconsider its tariff decision.
