Unstable weather has disrupted Estonia\u2019s timber market through much of 2025. A mild winter, which failed to freeze soils, was followed by an exceptionally wet summer that left many forests impassable for heavy machinery. Logging operations have been curtailed, and in some cases halted entirely. The result has been a tightening supply of roundwood, forcing sawmills to compete fiercely for limited volumes.<\/p>\n
Domestic supply shortfalls are being offset partly by imports from Scandinavia, but these carry higher costs and logistical risks. At local auctions, larger industrial groups, backed by stronger purchasing power, continue to dominate, often leaving smaller operators unable to secure raw material. Industry representatives warn that if this imbalance persists, production cuts in smaller mills may become unavoidable.<\/p>\n
Price data from the Estonian Private Forest Association (MT\u00dc Eesti Erametsaliit) for August 2025 illustrate the mounting pressure. Softwood sawlog prices rose sharply: pine logs climbed 7.1% in a single month and spruce logs 4.2%. Over the year, the increases have been even more pronounced \u2014 pine logs up 15.6% (\u20ac13.9\/m\u00b3) and spruce logs up 17.8% (\u20ac15.9\/m\u00b3). Thin logs also gained, though more modestly. By contrast, softwood pulpwood slipped slightly in August, with pine and spruce down 1\u20131.5%. Compared with a year earlier, pulpwood prices have plunged: down roughly 25% for pine and spruce and 23% for aspen.<\/p>\n
Hardwood assortments presented a mixed picture. Birch veneer logs and birch sawlogs saw minor gains in August, but over a 12-month horizon most hardwood categories have weakened \u2014 birch logs down nearly 10% year-on-year (\u20ac10.5\/m\u00b3) and birch thin logs by more than 11% (\u20ac8.75\/m\u00b3).
