US President Donald Trump has lifted import tariffs on softwood pulp from the European Union, a move aimed at normalizing competitiveness in the pulp market. The 15% tariff on EU softwood pulp, which had previously affected unbleached, semi-bleached, and bleached pulp, was removed on 8 September. At the same time, a 10% tariff on Latin American hardwood pulp was also lifted.<\/p>\n
The United States imports around 350,000 tons of semi-bleached and bleached softwood pulp from the EU each year, primarily from Sweden and Finland. Mets\u00e4 Group alone exported approximately \u20ac120 million worth of pulp to the US last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cInitially, softwood pulp from Europe faced a 10% tariff, later increased to 15%, which disadvantaged us compared to local and Canadian production. With the tariffs removed, the competitive landscape is returning to normal,\u201d said Ismo Nousiainen, CEO of Mets\u00e4 Fibre.<\/p>\n
