Germany\u2019s sawmill industry is heading in 2025 toward the lowest production volume of softwood lumber in the past six years.<\/p>\n
Production is expected to reach 21.3 million cubic meters (m\u00b3), representing a decrease of approximately 5% compared with the previous year. This continues the trend observed over the past two years, which have already recorded falling production.<\/p>\n
The main reasons for this development are persistently weak demand, particularly in export markets, and limited availability of raw materials. Since 2021, the volume of damaged wood has also been declining, further tightening the supply of usable material.<\/p>\n
Despite these difficulties, domestic demand has remained robust, supported by stable construction activity and the ongoing need for wood products across various sectors. Builders and manufacturers continue to rely on softwood lumber for construction, furniture production, and other wood-based industries, helping to partially offset the decline in overall output.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, the industry faces the ongoing challenge of adapting production capacities to align with the changing market situation in order to remain competitive. Many sawmills are reviewing their production planning, storage management, and sourcing strategies to respond to these evolving conditions.<\/p>\n
