China customs data show that from January to July 2025, Vietnam\u2019s timber exports to China surged significantly. Export volumes rose 65.8% year-on-year, while export values nearly doubled, increasing by 94.5%. In July alone, Vietnam exported 36,300 cubic meters of timber to China, a 140.6% increase compared with July 2024, with an import value of US$24.62 million, up 239% year-on-year.<\/p>\n
Data indicate that from January to July 2025, Vietnam\u2019s ash exports to China grew by 45.4% year-on-year, oak exports increased by 1,124.3%.<\/p>\n
The unusual route is largely linked to China\u2019s suspension of direct U.S. log imports in March 2025. Although sawn timber imports remain permitted, uncertainty and supply instability have prompted Chinese importers to rely on a Vietnam-based detour. Timber from the United States is first shipped to Vietnam, sometimes undergoing minimal processing or transit, and then exported onward to China.<\/p>\n
While this route increases shipping, processing, and storage costs, it remains cost-effective due to tariff barriers. The indirect path allows Chinese buyers to maintain access to North American species despite trade restrictions.<\/p>\n
The transshipment has consequences for end users. Furniture, flooring, and musical instrument manufacturers in China face higher input costs, which may squeeze margins or push prices upward. Meanwhile, U.S. timber exports to China fell sharply in the first seven months of 2025, with log exports down 69%, reaching zero in July.
