The Danish timber sector is warning of substantial financial pressures following the implementation of new packaging regulations that took effect on January 1 as part of the EU Packaging Directive.<\/p>\n
According to the Danish Timber Packaging Association (DTE), the extended producer responsibility (EPR) rules will transfer cost burdens to the manufacturer whose name or label appears on the packaging, even if the design and specifications are determined by the customer. DTE estimates that this \u201cunequal\u201d application could cost the industry more than DKK 60 million annually, with pallet prices expected to rise by roughly 20%.<\/p>\n
Christian Bisgaard Jensen, CEO of Dansk Tr\u00e6emballage, described the current framework as \u201cneither fair nor efficient\u201d and warned that it could hinder the development of recyclable and reusable solutions. He noted that imported products are often able to bypass similar costs, putting domestic producers at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n
The association also criticized the current fee structure, claiming it relies on outdated data, fails to differentiate between clean, recyclable wood and mixed wood waste, and unnecessarily drives up costs. DTE highlighted that this approach threatens jobs and competitiveness in Denmark.<\/p>\n
In response, the association is calling for reforms that would align fees with design responsibility, adjust charges according to environmental impact, and ensure that imported packaging meets the same standards.
