Lumber prices, which had experienced a sharp decline of over 20% in August, saw a modest rebound on Thursday following an announcement from Interfor Corporation, one of North America's largest lumber producers. Interfor revealed that it will reduce lumber production by approximately 145 million board feet between September and December 2025, representing roughly 12% of its normal operating capacity. The company has an annual lumber production capacity of about 4.7 billion board feet.<\/p>\n

The temporary curtailments will be implemented through a combination of reduced operating hours, prolonged holiday breaks, reconfigured shift schedules, and extended maintenance shutdowns. These measures are expected to affect all of Interfor\u2019s operating regions, with both Canadian and U.S. operations anticipated to lower production by approximately 12% each. Interfor stated that the curtailments are a response to persistently weak market conditions and ongoing economic uncertainty. The company added that it will continue to monitor market conditions across all its operations and adjust production plans as needed.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes after a period of declining lumber futures prices. Since reaching a three-year high on August 1, futures had fallen in 18 of the subsequent 22 trading sessions. Prices moved higher following Interfor\u2019s statement, suggesting that the market is responding to the expected reduction in supply.<\/p>\n

The lumber market has faced pressure from multiple factors, including increased U.S. antidumping and countervailing duties on Canadian imports. These duties rose to approximately 35% from about 15% earlier this year and are part of a long-standing trade dispute over Canadian softwood lumber exports. Additional speculation about potential tariffs under national security provisions has further contributed to market volatility.<\/p>\n

Interfor\u2019s decision to scale back production is aimed at addressing current oversupply concerns and supporting lumber prices. The company emphasized that it remains committed to adjusting operations in line with evolving market dynamics to ensure long-term sustainability and profitability.<\/p>\n
