The indirect effects of the tariffs are starting to be seen in the forest industry, the Finnish Forest Industry Federation says. The price of market softwood pulp has fallen in the first half of the year and the price difference with hardwood pulp has increased. Export prices of board and paper have also decreased in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n
According to the organization, the economic situation is now challenging and the outlook is bleak.<\/p>\n
\"The uncertainties in the global economy are also reflected in the operating environment of the forest industry. The industry is adaptable, but from Finland we cannot influence the trends in the international economy. Therefore, we must ensure that we remain a competitive and attractive investment environment,\" says\u00a0Maarit Lindstr\u00f6m\u00a0, Chief Economist of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, in a press release.<\/p>\n
Growth in sawmilling<\/strong><\/p>\n However, the uncertainty was not yet reflected in the forest industry's production volumes in the second quarter of the year. Softwood lumber production amounted to 3.2 million cubic meters, which is 10 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. The increase is partly due to the fact that political strikes and extensive maintenance and repair shutdowns reduced production volumes in the comparison year.<\/p>\n Paper production decreased by three percent to 700,000 tonnes and paperboard production also decreased by three percent to 900,000 tonnes. However, pulp production was 14 percent higher than in the same quarter a year ago, totaling 1.8 million tonnes.<\/p>\n The value of total forest industry product exports in the second quarter of the year was 3.2 billion euros.
