Norway's timber industry reached new heights in the second quarter of 2025, with record volumes of harvesting and soaring timber prices, according to fresh figures from Statistics Norway.<\/p>\n
A total of 3.48 million cubic meters of industrial timber was harvested, marking the highest volume ever recorded in a single quarter. The total harvest volume, including roundwood for energy chips and scrap timber, reached an impressive 3.65 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n
At the same time, forest owners received an average of 874 kroner (\u20ac74.99) per cubic meter, a new record in current prices. For an inflation-adjusted price level this high, one must look back to the 1980s.<\/p>\n
Tree-specific price increases<\/strong><\/p>\n Prices have risen dramatically across the board. The average price for spruce logs was NOK 1,057 (\u20ac90.62) per cubic meter, while pine logs reached NOK 1,008 (\u20ac86.40), representing a 38% price increase from the second quarter of 2024. Pulpwood prices also saw significant jumps, with spruce averaging NOK 633 (\u20ac54.25) per cubic meter and pine at NOK 620 (\u20ac53.13), increases of 26% and 31% respectively compared to the same quarter last year.<\/p>\n Exports of logs on the rise<\/strong><\/p>\n Norway also exported a significant amount of timber in the second quarter of 2025, totaling 1.37 million cubic meters. Of this, spruce and pine logs alone accounted for 740,000 cubic meters, an export growth of 11% compared to the second quarter of 2024. Concurrently, exports of pulpwood decreased slightly.<\/p>\n The combination of record harvests and increased prices points to a strongly demand-driven market. The record-high prices in both nominal and real terms suggest price pressure from international market conditions, logistical challenges, or generally high demand.<\/p>\n High prices create challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n CEO of the Norwegian Wood Industry, Heidi Finstad, notes that low lumber prices combined with high raw material costs are challenging for the industry.<\/p>\n \"Failure in the production of new homes and high raw material prices combined with low lumber prices in relation to costs are challenging the entire wood industry,\" Finstad said.<\/p>\n She pointed out that companies are adapting to the difficult times while also seeing opportunities. Finstad expects the renovation market to pick up, driven by falling interest rates, high second-hand housing sales, real wage growth, and low unemployment. There is also a great need for energy efficiency in buildings, a market she expects to strengthen throughout the autumn.<\/p>\n Latest figures from the Norwegian Wood Industry show that sales of wood-based building products, such as structural timber and white lumber, fell by 3.2% in July 2025 compared to the same month last year. However, accumulated sales in volume through July increased by 5.3% year-on-year.
