The council described the EUDR, which has faced \u201cdelays, changes, opposition, uncertainty, and legal issues\u201d since its adoption, as a \u201cmisguided effort\u201d that could undermine trade trust.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"510\" data-end=\"714\">Under the EUDR, due to take effect later this year, companies must prove that products entering the EU market are not linked to deforestation. The ALC said the framework is fundamentally flawed, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"716\" data-end=\"915\">\n<p data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"915\">\u201cThe EU continues to try to thread the needle of their regulation, but its dilemma shows that it faces strong internal and external opposition. It is time to admit defeat and find new solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"917\" data-end=\"1336\">The criticism comes as the EUDR faces renewed scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic. Reports indicate that some of the world\u2019s largest pulp, paper, and timber producers may qualify as \u201cdeforestation-free\u201d suppliers, reviving debate over \u201cgreen lanes.\u201d EU and US officials are reportedly drafting a framework agreement to address concerns raised by US producers and exporters and to avoid undue impact on US-EU trade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1716\">The United States is currently listed by the EU as one of 141 \u201clow-risk\u201d countries. US trade officials are lobbying for a new \u201cnegligible risk\u201d classification to simplify compliance for products originating in the US. Critics warn this could weaken regulations by allowing products from \u201cstandard-risk\u201d countries, such as Mexico, to transit to Europe with minimal inspections.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"2013\">Trade analysts also note potential diplomatic and legal repercussions. <strong data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1809\">Palm Oil Monitor<\/strong>, an industry monitoring group, emphasized that if the US receives preferential treatment, major exporters like Indonesia and Malaysia should also benefit from streamlined compliance.
