<\/span>Germany\u2019s federal government has unveiled its so-called \u201cBau-Turbo\u201d initiative to accelerate housing construction, but two leading timber industry associations have expressed skepticism about its effectiveness.<\/p>\n

The German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH) welcomed the law as a positive impulse but stressed that it alone cannot resolve the housing shortage or pull the construction sector out of its current difficulties. DeSH highlighted the need for reliable funding for building subsidies and streamlined building regulations, particularly to support serial construction and renovation. Julia M\u00f6bus, DeSH\u2019s managing director, emphasized that municipalities must actively use the new regulatory freedoms to push projects forward and that the timber sector can deliver rapid, flexible, and climate-friendly housing solutions. She also criticized the draft 2026 federal budget for eliminating key funding, such as support for serial renovation.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the German Timber Industry Council (DHWR) criticized the government\u2019s package as insufficient and warned against placing the burden of housing construction solely on municipalities while ignoring climate protection. In a new position paper, DHWR called for federal-level measures, including a temporary reduction in VAT, better funding conditions, and a timber construction quota for public contracts. The council also proposed increasing funding for climate-friendly construction, introducing tax relief for social housing, and ensuring that at least 30% of public buildings are constructed from timber by 2030.<\/p>\n

Both associations stressed that only coordinated action between the federal government, municipalities, and the construction sector can effectively address the housing shortage, rising construction costs, and climate protection goals.<\/p>\n

DeSH and DHWR are closely monitoring parliamentary discussions on amendments to the Federal Building Code, urging swift implementation of measures that can make the Bau-Turbo a practical tool rather than a symbolic gesture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
