Stora Enso, in collaboration with the EU-funded Woodcircles project, has successfully produced cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels entirely from reclaimed softwood lumber. <\/span>The project was carried out at Stora Enso\u2019s Ybbs Mill in Austria and represents a step forward in circular construction practices.<\/p>\n

The process began with reclaimed softwood lumber collected by project partner Enem\u00e6rke & Petersen A\/S. The wood was processed into standard boards at the Ybbs Mill, then sorted, planed, and turned into CLT lamellas\u2014thin layers of timber used in CLT production. In collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute, Stora Enso produced two full-size CLT master panels: one fully made from reclaimed wood and another hybrid panel combining reclaimed and new softwood.<\/p>\n

These panels are intended for use as the structural core of a modular demonstration building that will be assembled, dismantled, and reassembled in multiple cities across Europe. The building aims to show the practical potential of circular timber construction, highlighting how reclaimed wood can be reused in high-performance applications without compromising structural integrity.<\/p>\n

Michael Harm, Stora Enso\u2019s project lead for Woodcircles, said, \u201cThe process looked straightforward on paper, but in practice it involved a steep learning curve. There is increasing pressure to move from linear to circular material use, and this project helps us take meaningful steps in that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Woodcircles project is a four-year Horizon Europe initiative with 20 partners across Europe, exploring how wood can be reused, re-engineered, and reintegrated into the built environment. It also emphasizes cross-sector collaboration, with engineers, architects, researchers, and manufacturers working together to develop standards, tools, and systems that support circularity.<\/p>\n

The next phase focuses on Design for Manufacture, Assembly, and Disassembly (DFMAD), enabling buildings to be taken apart and reused with minimal waste. Stora Enso, together with Waugh Thistleton Architects and other partners, will develop a standardized modular building using reclaimed CLT panels. This demonstrator building will tour partner cities, showcasing recycled timber in real-world construction and demonstrating the benefits of adaptability and reuse.<\/p>\n

Essi Laapas, Sustainability Manager at Stora Enso, added, \u201cReclaiming structural softwood lumber from urban environments helps conserve resources and reduces pressure on primary forests.
