<\/span>Timo Springer, President of the Carinthian Federation of Austrian Industries (IV) and head of Springer Maschinenfabrik, has sharply criticized the EU\u2019s recent tariff deal with the United States. Springer, a long-standing advocate for Austrian industrial competitiveness and export-driven growth, has led his family-owned company in Friesach for decades, building it into a global supplier of high-tech machinery for the sawmill sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cCatastrophic\u201d: This is how Springer describes the EU\u2019s \u201ctariff deal\u201d with the USA. \u201cI can only marvel at this amateurish approach, which completely disregards reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Springer Maschinenfabrik, founded in Friesach, Carinthia, specializes in the design and manufacture of advanced sawmill and wood processing equipment. Its machines are used by sawmills worldwide for cutting, planing, and processing timber. Over the years, the company has built a reputation for innovation, precision engineering, and tailored solutions for both European and international clients.<\/p>\n

The repercussions are massive: For the Springer machine factory, for example, one of its largest, painstakingly built-up promising markets, the USA, is \u201cgone overnight.\u201d The Carinthian company can no longer compete in the USA with the tariff surcharge. This is because the high-tech machines from Friesach, which are in demand worldwide and are used in the sawmill industry, are subject to a tariff of 35 to 40 percent due to the 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum. \u201cI assume that our American competitors have opened a bottle or two of champagne,\u201d says Springer bitterly.<\/p>\n

Austria\u2019s sawmill industry, one of the largest in Europe, relies heavily on advanced machinery exports and international competitiveness. The sector is closely integrated into global markets, with the U.S. being an important destination for Austrian technology suppliers. The new tariff burden, Springer warned, risks undermining this position at a time when European producers are already facing high energy costs, strong regulatory pressures, and a difficult construction market.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
