<\/span>Opposition to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is intensifying in Germany, as associations from both the wood packaging and mechanical engineering industries warn that the law threatens to overburden companies with excessive bureaucracy and unrealistic compliance requirements.<\/p>\n

The Federal Association of Wood Packaging, Pallets, Export Packaging (HPE) has sent a letter to Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer urging an immediate halt to the EUDR until workable solutions are in place. The group, which represents more than 420 companies, argues that the regulation is detached from business realities and risks imposing heavy costs on firms.<\/p>\n

HPE highlights the lack of a \u201czero-risk\u201d category as a central flaw, noting that countries with no deforestation risk\u2014such as Germany and other EU member states\u2014should not be subject to the same strict due diligence requirements. The association also points to impractical rules on reference numbers, which it says would force firms to adopt costly automated systems for warehouse data collection and restructure logistics processes in ways that contradict everyday operations.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), which represents 3,600 companies across Europe, has described the law as \u201cbureaucratic madness\u201d and is calling for a two-year delay. Although the machinery sector does not directly import wood, rubber, or leather, it relies on components made from them\u2014such as tires, seals, and conveyor belts\u2014that would fall under the new traceability rules.<\/p>\n

The VDMA warns that ensuring plot-level traceability across global supply chains is technically impossible for many firms and could disrupt deliveries. The group has proposed limiting due diligence obligations to first distributors, introducing exemptions for small volumes and non-commercial products, and classifying certain countries as safe origins to simplify compliance.<\/p>\n

The EUDR is set to apply to large companies from December 30, 2025, and to small and medium-sized firms from June 30, 2026. Both HPE and VDMA caution that without significant revisions, the regulation could weaken the competitiveness of European businesses, deepen skilled labor shortages by forcing firms to hire more administrative staff, and create duplicative systems that undermine rather than support environmental objectives.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
