<\/span>Domtar will temporarily suspend operations at its Maniwaki sawmill in Quebec beginning October 10, the company confirmed this week. The mill, acquired through Domtar\u2019s 2023 purchase of Resolute Forest Products, cited challenging market conditions and rising U.S. softwood lumber tariffs\u2014now exceeding 35 per cent\u2014as the primary reasons for the closure.<\/p>\n

This marks the latest disruption for the facility, which was closed for several months starting in December 2024. When operations resumed in early June, the mill ran approximately 50 hours per week. About 120 employees had previously been laid off during that shutdown. The Maniwaki community, with a population of roughly 3,800 as of 2021, faces significant economic consequences from the new pause in production.<\/p>\n

Longtime employees expressed frustration and concern. Mario Mantha, who has worked at the mill for more than 30 years, said the announcement has left workers demoralized. \u201cEverybody\u2019s been down in the dumps since we heard yesterday,\u201d he told Radio-Canada, adding that he worries the closure will ripple across the local forestry sector. Another employee, St\u00e9phane St-Amour, remarked, \u201cIt\u2019s hard because we stopped last December and now we\u2019re stopping again, and we don\u2019t know when we\u2019ll start again.\u201d Mario Lacasse put it even more bluntly: \u201cWe are hostages. Everybody is depressed\u2026 stuff like this shouldn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local officials also highlighted the broader economic impact. Chantal Lamarche, warden for the MRC Vall\u00e9e-de-la-Gatineau, described the shutdown as an \u201ceconomic catastrophe,\u201d estimating that around 130 jobs are affected.<\/p>\n

Domtar is also pausing operations at its Glenwood, Arkansas sawmill on October 10, which produces approximately 167 million board feet of southern yellow pine annually and employs 113 workers. Company representatives told local authorities that low lumber prices and high interest rates are the main factors behind the temporary closure. The facility will continue processing its current inventory of logs, and officials plan to reassess operations in December.<\/p>\n

The Glenwood sawmill primarily produces dimensional lumber and radius edge decking for the Southcentral U.S. construction market. Local leaders noted logistical constraints, including limited rail access via the Caddo River Railroad, which affects the cost-effectiveness of shipping and overall operational viability.
