The increase follows several months of declining supplies of damaged wood and a noticeable recovery in demand for freshly harvested logs. In many regions, prices for spruce roundwood have been raised by €5 to €10 per cubic meter. For spruce assortments in strength class 2b+ and quality grade B (BC), average prices now range between €112 and €118 per cubic meter, a level that forest owners have not seen for some time.

The rise in prices has been developing gradually since the second quarter, but the new month has brought a clear acceleration. Logging and transport are currently proceeding at a brisk pace, with sawmills eager to secure volumes before inventories become critically low. The most important factor behind this sudden price push is the sharp reduction in salvage wood. While in past years large volumes of beetle-damaged timber came onto the market, recent weather conditions—particularly the heavy rainfall in July—kept bark beetle activity low. As a result, the expected influx of damaged wood never materialized, leaving sawmills short of raw material.

Faced with this shortage, sawmills are turning to higher purchase prices to encourage forest owners to cut more fresh logs. Without sufficient damaged wood to fill their needs, companies are dependent on healthy spruce, fir, and pine. Reports from forest owner associations suggest that sawmills have very limited stocks, making the current procurement pressure even stronger. Demand for spruce is especially high, but pine is also in good demand, despite the usual discounts compared with spruce prices.

Market participants describe a clear differentiation in pricing between species and qualities. Beetle-damaged spruce is being accepted only with deductions of about €20 per cubic meter from the regular BC price. Fir is traded at roughly €10 below spruce, while pine shows a larger spread, usually between €35 and €45 less per cubic meter. Even with these discounts, the overall level remains higher than in the preceding months, underlining the strong demand across all conifer assortments.

After the quiet summer period, when both production and sales tend to slow, activity has picked up considerably. August was described as calm, with only moderate harvesting and subdued buying interest, but September has brought a decisive turnaround. Deliveries are flowing quickly again, and in many areas sawmills are competing directly for the available supply. Forest owners now find themselves in a stronger negotiating position than earlier in the year.

The situation in the industrial wood segment is somewhat more balanced. Demand for pulpwood, panelwood, and paper assortments is steady, with buyers taking normal volumes at mostly unchanged prices. However, the pulp and paper industry is said to be well stocked, which limits any upward movement in this market. Transport flows remain stable, and no major disruptions are being reported.

Forest owner groups advise directing more material toward industrial wood markets rather than energy wood. The background is that the market for woodchips and energy assortments continues to be described as very weak, with difficult selling conditions and poor price levels. By shifting volumes toward the industrial segment, they argue, forest owners can relieve pressure on the energy wood market while also benefiting from better sales prospects.

Log prices in Germany moved up sharply at the beginning of September, with forest owners reporting significantly higher offers from the sawmilling industry.
