<\/span>Lumber prices across North America held steady in mid-August, even as softwood duties, wildfires, and volatile futures weighed on market sentiment.<\/p>\n

The benchmark Western Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) 2\u00d74 #2&Btr KD (RL) remained at US$533 per thousand board feet for the week ending 15 August, flat from the previous week. This represents a 5% increase from a month earlier and a 43% rise from the same week in 2024.<\/p>\n

Canadian sawmills raised prices to offset part of the 35% duty on US-bound softwood shipments, but weak downstream demand led buyers to favor small, short-term purchases. Eastern Canadian suppliers passed duty costs unevenly, prompting buyers to shop around. Southern Yellow Pine sales remained steady, supported by seasonal demand and ongoing shifts from northern and western species.<\/p>\n

Lumber futures have been highly volatile. Futures prices fell nearly 19.5%, from a peak of US$695 in early August to US$560 per thousand board feet, following weaker-than-expected US real estate data and scaled-back construction activity.<\/p>\n

Wildfires in Manitoba added further uncertainty. Fires in northern Manitoba were mostly contained by mid-August, while new large-scale fires emerged in eastern regions, with the full impact on timber and structures still unknown.<\/p>\n

Sawmill shutdowns in North America also contributed to market volatility. In South Carolina, closures at the Darlington and Esty mills disrupted upstream forest management and downstream processing, reducing regional timber production capacity and affecting local employment.<\/p>\n
