<\/span>In an open letter at the end of August, Dr. Stephan Lang, President of the German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH), addressed Germany's forest owners to counteract the acute undersupply of timber:<\/p>\n

\"At a time when the sawmill and timber industry is facing unprecedented challenges due to global uncertainty and national consumer crises, I would like to turn to you to ensure that our industry, and thus the entire value chain, is constantly, continuously, and safely supplied with the raw material wood. While climate change has fortunately not caused extreme damage to our forests this year, the logging of recent months, which was held back in anticipation of major disasters, is already leading to an acute shortage of raw materials for domestic timber processing in many regions, forcing some companies to adjust their production or implement short-time work. This development not only endangers individual operating locations but also weakens the entire industry at a time when the economy and society are experiencing a sense of optimism.\"<\/p>\n

Don't send false signals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unless logging is increased again in the coming weeks and months, Lang fears the situation could escalate into an \"existential crisis for the sawmill and timber industry by the beginning of 2026.\" Major economic difficulties and numerous additional companies on short-time work would be one of the consequences. Added to this is an abrupt slump in domestic timber construction, which has finally shown positive signs since the summer. Lang also wants to avoid sending a message to society that \" wood doesn't save the climate after all ,\" because there isn't enough wood available in our domestic forests.<\/p>\n

Appeal: actively increase impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Here lies a shared responsibility to politically and socially establish wood as a raw material and building material of the future,\" explains the DeSH President. \"The situation becomes particularly acute when a shortage of wood for the domestic market simultaneously leads to raw materials being exported abroad. This is incomprehensible to many entrepreneurs, but also to large sections of society. State forests, in particular, bear a special responsibility for our entire economy. A resilient and efficient forest and wood value chain can only be created through the close cooperation of all stakeholders. On behalf of our members, I would therefore like to appeal to you to actively support an increase in logging \u2013 because it makes both ecological and economic sense for forest conversion and our domestic timber industry.\"<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
