<\/span>Carter Holt Harvey plans to close the Eves Valley sawmill on the South Island, a facility built in the 1980s and long considered one of the country\u2019s best-known mills. The agreement is still under discussion, but once confirmed, more than 140 people will lose their jobs.<\/p>\n

The closure is being seen as part of wider difficulties in New Zealand\u2019s forestry sector, which has come under pressure from falling demand, rising production costs and the threat of new tariffs.<\/p>\n

Local producers report that demand is weakening not only from China\u2019s real estate industry, which has been a key buyer of New Zealand logs, but also from other markets around the world. At the same time, labour costs, diesel, electricity and transportation have all become more expensive, leaving mills with shrinking margins and in some cases operating at a loss.<\/p>\n

The difficulties are being aggravated by an investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Commerce into New Zealand wood products. The results of the investigation are expected in November and may result in higher tariffs, which would remove what has been a price advantage for New Zealand exporters in overseas markets.<\/p>\n

Even large and long-established plants on the South Island are now struggling to remain viable. If Carter Holt Harvey proceeds with its closure, it will mark one of the most significant reductions in sawmilling capacity in recent years, raising concerns about the stability of supply within the country\u2019s forestry sector.<\/p>\n

China continues to play the role of New Zealand\u2019s largest customer. In the first seven months of 2025, log exports from New Zealand to China increased by 1.1% compared with the same period a year earlier, making up 56% of China\u2019s total log imports. However, customs data show that the total value of these shipments fell by 3.1%, with the average import price at $118 per cubic metre, down 4.2% year-on-year.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
