<\/span><\/strong>Finland\u2019s forestry sector has yet to purchase roughly half of the wood required for 2025, raising questions about market momentum after several years of strong demand, according to Kalle Kartunen, head of research at the Finnish Advisory Council for Agriculture and Forestry (MTK).<\/p>\n

Pulp production restrictions, various loss-making economic factors, and the closure of another Finnish paper mill have created a cautious mood in the forest and timber industry. Trading volumes were low in July, and timber prices dropped, prompting speculation about whether the boom that Finnish forest owners have enjoyed in recent years is over.<\/p>\n

Kartunen said the slowdown largely reflects seasonal market behavior rather than long-term trends. \u201cRecent events will not have a significant impact on future wood demand in Finland. This mainly applies to Southeast Finland, where forest resources have been fully utilized for a long time. The demand for wood for production will continue to exist,\u201d he said, adding that the market is still in a \u201cwaiting mode\u201d as summer ends.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that timber trade decisions remain important for forest owners. \u201cHalf of the timber needed for industry has not yet been purchased for this year, so we can expect that timber trade will go well. Selling timber from your own land is always an important decision for a forest owner. You should not act hastily. You should keep in mind the competition in the timber trade,\u201d Kartunen said.<\/p>\n

Early signs of economic recovery are visible in Europe. Prices and demand for sawn timber have remained fairly strong. A customs agreement with the United States, which accounts for approximately 10% of Finnish forest industry exports, is expected to reduce market uncertainty for finished products.
