Compared with the same period in 2024, both remain higher, with spruce up 15.1% and pine 12.2%. Hardwood logs experienced sharper declines; birch logs fell 21.1%, though aspen logs increased slightly by 0.1% for the quarter and 18.1% year-on-year.

Pulpwood prices decreased across all grades. Pine pulpwood dropped 10.3%, spruce 10%, and aspen 7.9%. Firewood prices fell 2.8% in private forests and 1.6% in state forests. The competitiveness of energy wood declined, influenced by a 10.2% fall in oil prices and a strengthening of the euro relative to the dollar.

Internationally, Finnish timber prices rose sharply, with spruce logs up 32.3% for the quarter and birch logs reaching record highs. Prices in Austria and Switzerland remained stable, although distribution of energy wood faced logistical challenges. The Russian timber sector showed declines, with exports to China falling and production volumes decreasing across several categories.

The Estonian wood industry continues to consolidate. A Swedbank study highlights a sector recovery and growth in investment, while emphasizing the need for stable economic policies. Several companies changed ownership or merged with larger groups: Combiwood Group acquired the Toftan sawmill, Lemeks expanded into furniture production, and a new wood processing plant is under construction in Kohtla-Järve, representing a total investment of 29 million euros.

Developments in the energy market directly affect the sector’s competitiveness. Gas prices fell 19.1% and CO₂ costs dropped 6.1% in Q2, reducing the appeal of energy wood. A mild winter is forecast, which is expected to limit the accumulation of large timber stocks.

Softwood log and birch assortments are expected to see moderate price increases in the third quarter, while pulpwood and energy wood markets remain uncertain. Continued consolidation in the European timber sector may alter the market structure, reducing the share of smaller operators. The sustainability of the Estonian wood industry depends on clear forest use policies and strategic direction to support sector development under challenging economic and political conditions.

The Estonian timber market experienced notable developments in the second quarter of 2025, with prices in private forests generally declining while certain assortments in state forests and in Finland increased, according to Heiki Hepner of OÜ Tark Mets for the … Continue reading →

[4716

post-89216","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
