<\/span>According to China Customs, China\u2019s log imports reached 16.79 million cubic metres valued at US$2.695 billion in the first half of 2025, marking a decline of 11% in volume and 18% in value compared with the same period in 2024. The average price for imported logs stood at US$160 (CIF) per cubic metre, down 8% from the previous year.<\/p>\n

Of the total log imports, softwood logs fell 7% to 12.34 million cubic metres, accounting for 73% of total imports, up 3 percentage points from the first half of 2024. The average price for softwood logs declined 6% to US$123 (CIF) per cubic metre.<\/p>\n

Hardwood log imports dropped 20% to 4.45 million cubic metres, representing 27% of total imports. The average price for hardwood logs fell 5% to US$263 (CIF) per cubic metre. Within this category, tropical logs accounted for 2.31 million cubic metres valued at US$552 million CIF, down 22% in volume and 28% in value, representing 14% of the national total and a 2-percentage-point decrease from the same period in 2024.<\/p>\n

Rise in log imports from European countries<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the opening of the China-Europe Freight Railway, log imports from European countries have risen in recent years. In the first half of 2025, imports from France (+2%) and Germany (+7%) increased, while imports from Slovakia surged over 100%.<\/p>\n

Sharp decline in log imports from the US<\/strong><\/p>\n

China\u2019s log imports from the United States plunged 63% to 411,000 cubic metres in the first half of 2025, valued at US$194 million, down 55% in value. This drop significantly contributed to the overall decline in China\u2019s log imports.<\/p>\n

The sharp reduction was primarily due to China\u2019s suspension of log imports from the United States starting in March 2025. To offset this shortfall, Chinese enterprises increased imports from Canada (+4%) and Latvia (+47%). Conversely, log imports from PNG, Russia, Solomon Islands, Germany, and France declined.<\/p>\n

Japan becomes second largest log supplier<\/strong><\/p>\n

China\u2019s log imports from Japan rose 29% to 897,000 cubic metres, making Japan the second largest supplier. Almost all imported logs from Japan are softwoods, appreciated for their high quality, large diameter, and competitive prices. Short transportation distance also contributes to their popularity. China\u2019s imports from Japan have been increasing steadily since 2016.<\/p>\n
