Central European and Scandinavian buyers say the level remains uncompetitive given the condition of the wood and high transport costs.

Forestry agency Coillte and private owners are dealing with the fallout from storms Darragh and Éowyn, which together damaged around 26,000 hectares of forest between December 2024 and January 2025. Estimates put the volume at up to 10 million cubic metres – equivalent to more than two years of Ireland’s normal harvest.

Authorities have set up a windblow taskforce to speed up licensing and salvage operations, but harvest and clearance remain slow compared with responses seen in Nordic countries.
