<\/span>Storm-felled timber in Ireland is still trading at prices too high for most European buyers, even as millions of cubic metres of damaged wood lie unharvested across the country.<\/p>\n

Sitka spruce sawlogs and pallet wood from Irish ports are offered at \u20ac95 to \u20ac120 per cubic metre, according to market sources. Central European and Scandinavian buyers say the level remains uncompetitive given the condition of the wood and high transport costs.<\/p>\n

Forestry agency Coillte and private owners are dealing with the fallout from storms Darragh and \u00c9owyn, which together damaged around 26,000 hectares of forest between December 2024 and January 2025. Estimates put the volume at up to 10 million cubic metres \u2013 equivalent to more than two years of Ireland\u2019s normal harvest.<\/p>\n

Authorities have set up a windblow taskforce to speed up licensing and salvage operations, but harvest and clearance remain slow compared with responses seen in Nordic countries. Industry officials warn that timber quality declines rapidly if extraction is delayed.<\/p>\n

Irish sawmills have pledged to lift capacity by about 30% to absorb the oversupply, but analysts say pricing pressure is unlikely to ease in the short term. Market resistance across strength grades has led to sluggish sales into continental Europe.<\/p>\n

Policymakers are also promoting domestic use of the timber under a \u201cWood First\u201d approach, encouraging greater uptake in housing and public projects to reduce reliance on exports.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
