<\/span>Sweden\u2019s sawmilling industry is facing some of its toughest conditions in decades, with most mills losing money as high raw material costs, weak construction demand and currency headwinds weigh heavily on profitability.<\/p>\n

According to Vida AB\u2019s chief executive, M\u00e5ns Johansson<\/strong>, as many as nine out of ten sawmills in Sweden are currently operating at a loss. He described the situation as unprecedented, pointing to soaring log prices that have sharply eroded margins and a slowdown in building activity across Europe that has reduced demand for sawn wood products. The Swedish krona\u2019s exchange rate has further hurt export competitiveness in a sector that depends heavily on overseas markets.<\/p>\n

Although log prices have begun to stabilise after a steep climb in recent years, Johansson said there were still no signs of improvement for sawmills. \u201cThe industry remains under severe pressure, with weak markets and continued cost strain,\u201d he said in recent comments to Swedish media. Demand is unlikely to rebound significantly until construction activity recovers, leaving producers squeezed between stubbornly high input costs and muted sales prospects.<\/p>\n

Vida, Sweden\u2019s largest privately owned sawmilling group and majority-owned by Canada\u2019s Canfor Corporation, has itself expanded in recent months through the acquisition of AB Karl Hedin\u2019s sawmills in central Sweden, strengthening its geographic footprint and adding capacity. But even as the company grows, its leadership is preparing for change.<\/p>\n

Johansson, who has been CEO since 2019, will step down at the end of September to become vice chairman of the board and continue as president of Canfor Europe, with responsibility for group strategy. He cited family reasons for the move and said he would remain closely involved in the company\u2019s development. He will be succeeded by Karl-Johan L\u00f6wenadler, currently head of Vida Wood, who has been with the group for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

The shift comes at a pivotal time for the industry. While consolidation and acquisitions may help strengthen balance sheets, the fundamental pressures of high log prices, subdued demand and volatile currency markets continue to cast a shadow over the outlook for Sweden\u2019s sawmills.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
