One of the businesspeople interviewed by Agro Estadão reports that, in the last 20 days, he has had 120 orders canceled, resulting in a loss of approximately R$6 million.

The greatest consequences affect industries operating with planted forests and processed wood, particularly manufacturers of flooring, panels, and moldings. Uncertainty over the measure's final terms has also led to a backlog of cargo at ports and factory yards, as well as work stoppages and even layoffs.

Operations involving timber from native forests have also been affected. Materials already processed in factories and ready for export are being held up in factory yards in the Amazon. Some cargo stored in Brazilian ports, awaiting environmental licensing for shipment, has had its processing suspended.

Exports suspended

"We've seen reports of collective vacations in the South and Southeast, where some companies have their only market in the United States," says Frank Rogieri Almeida, president of the National Forum of Forest-Based Activities (FNBF). "With this tariff situation, production had to be halted, awaiting developments."

According to the president, materials ready for shipment have been held up. Cargo is stuck in industrial yards and in containers at ports. "Since July 10th, we've known that any shipment would arrive in the US after the tariffs began, and industries can't afford to risk arriving there with a 50% tariff."

There are no solid loss estimates yet, but the mood in the sector is uncertain. "It's a time of great apprehension and insecurity, both for industrial entrepreneurs and our employees," says Almeida.

This is the case of the group led by Leandro Serafin and two other brothers, which brings together two forestry companies: Brasil Tropical, a raw timber manufacturer, and BTP Floors, a flooring manufacturer. "We have 56 containers at the port, and about 80% are stuck. If the tariff remains in place, our operations in the American market will become unviable," he states. According to him, each container costs, on average, between US$40,000 and US$50,000.

At 31 years old, the company exports 95% of its products to the United States.
Headquartered in Mato Grosso with a distribution center in the US, the group employs 400 people. About 70% of its sales come from the United States. According to the businessman, there are no other markets capable of absorbing the products, and a 50% increase in the sector is unfeasible. "We can't absorb this tariff. The impact is absurd and still incalculable. If there's no agreement, it could be irreversible."

Sector requests urgency and deadline postponement

According to Paulo Pupo, director of the Brazilian Association of the Mechanically Processed Wood Industry ( Abimci ), this is not an isolated case. "There are ongoing collective vacations. Unfortunately, some layoffs have also been announced," he says regarding the situation at other companies in the sector.

Paulo highlights that, since the measure was announced, there has been an increase in distrust among buyers. Furthermore, some timber product segments depend practically 100% on this market. "There's no other market capable of absorbing our volume. Many products are tailored to the US construction sector."

For Pupo, the best—and most urgent—way is diplomatic, without political bias. "And also an official request to postpone this deadline, to give us some breathing room in the negotiations and to avoid applying the law of reciprocity, which could be interpreted as retaliation by the US and further undermine negotiation opportunities." He also recommends seeking conditions similar to those of competing countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Chile.

Cancellations and collective vacations

SM Floors, headquartered in Marília, São Paulo, has had to suspend operations. The flooring division, which exports almost exclusively to the United States, begins its collective vacation on August 1st. "We had 120 canceled orders, totaling R$6 million," explains Rafael Mason, commercial director.

Approximately ten containers remain stuck at the port. Only orders that would arrive in the country at the current rate were shipped. With no viable rerouting alternatives, the company is considering moving the plant to Paraguay if the new tariff is confirmed. "There, it would be possible to export at lower rates. But that takes time and requires investment."

Mason also demands a response from the Brazilian government. "We need a fair negotiation so we can get back to work. And in the meantime, credit lines would be essential to keep our employees."

Brazilian companies in the forestry export chain are already suffering a severe impact, even before the 50% tariff on Brazilian products announced by Donald Trump takes effect.
