At-wharf-gate (AWG) prices in New Zealand’s Southern North Island ports were set at around NZ$122/JAS for A-grade 3.9m logs in August, the highest August spot level since 2018. In the Chinese market, wholesale prices for radiata pine middle A-grade eased RMB 10/m³ in late July versus June, while hemlock and spruce logs posted gains of RMB 10–30/m³.

Export flows have remained resilient. Log uplift from Chinese ports increased from 50,000 m³/day in early July to just under 60,000 m³/day, indicating renewed momentum as the construction season begins. Traders expect sales prices to firm further into Q4, a period that typically sees historical price increases, particularly as New Zealand supply remains constrained.

The recently launched log futures market in China is beginning to play a role in pricing dynamics. Around 115,000 m³ was delivered against futures contracts in July, its first month of operation, with industry participants expecting buyer activity in this channel to expand in coming months.

China’s softwood log inventories at major ocean ports fell to 2.96 million m³ on August 2, 2025, down 4.2% (-131,000 m³) from late June. Radiata pine logs from New Zealand and Australia totalled 2.56 million m³, comprising nearly 86% of the overall inventory, up from 83% a month earlier.

Other origins saw sharper declines:

-Douglas-fir and hemlock stocks dropped 53% to 75,000 m³ (2.5% share).

-European spruce logs fell 33% to 79,000 m³ (2.5% share).

-Logs from other suppliers, including Japanese sugi and European red pine, totalled 249,000 m³ (-2.7%).

Average daily sales volumes reached 50,680 m³ in July, broadly stable from July 2024 but still well below 2023 levels of 72,500 m³.

With inventories below the key 3 million m³ threshold, New Zealand supply constrained, and seasonal construction demand rising in China, market participants expect further upward pressure on log prices into Q4 2025.

Log prices in China are holding at relatively firm levels for this time of year, supported by steady demand and tighter supply from New Zealand.
