<\/span>The high price of logs is creating problems for sawmills, according to the Finnish Sawmill Association.<\/p>\n

The first half of the year has been reasonably good for the industry. Finnish sawmills produced 6.3 million cubic metres of softwood lumber in the first six months of the year, 15% more than in the same period last year. Softwood lumber exports from Finland between January and May totalled 3.5 million cubic metres, up by one-fifth year-on-year.<\/p>\n

Export prices for softwood lumber also rose 9% compared with the corresponding period last year.<\/p>\n

However, the situation is expected to change as autumn approaches. According to responses from the sawmill industry in the Confederation of Finnish Industries\u2019 (EK) business survey, all key indicators \u2013 including the business situation, outlook, order backlog and sales price expectations \u2013 are showing negative trends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first half of the year on the export markets was still fairly good, but the outlook has weakened significantly and rapidly over the summer months. Demand for wood products is weak in many key markets, and the strengthening of the euro against the dollar is eroding profitability,\u201d said Finnish Sawmill Association CEO Tino Aalto in a statement.<\/p>\n

In addition, the high price level of logs is causing difficulties for sawmills. For two years, log prices have remained historically high relative to export prices for softwood lumber. Raw material costs are the largest cost item for sawmills, Aalto noted.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
