<\/span>Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd. has accelerated its North American expansion with the acquisition of the Teal Jones\u2013Plain Dealing (TJPD) sawmill in Louisiana, a key move designed to strengthen its U.S. housing business and face ongoing tariff fluctuations. The acquisition was completed on July 1, 2025.<\/p>\n

The TJPD sawmill, located near the Texas border, supplies around 40% of house framing in the region. The facility has an annual production capacity of 300 million board feet of lumber and can process approximately 1 million cubic meters of logs, enough to build roughly 14,000 standard American homes. The site spans 100 hectares, with plans to develop 40 hectares of unused land into a large-scale timber manufacturing center to support sustainability and long-term growth objectives.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a base using domestic timber helps diversify risk,\u201d said Etsuhachi Inoue, CEO of Sumitomo Forestry America, in an interview with industry media. The move is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on Canadian lumber, which, despite facing 35% tariffs and taxes, still accounts for nearly 30% of lumber used in the U.S. housing market.<\/p>\n

Sumitomo Forestry highlighted that the acquisition enhances its Fully Integrated Turnkey Provider (FITP) business, which designs and manufactures housing components such as panels and trusses. With demand particularly strong in Texas, especially in the Dallas area, the company plans to expand its U.S. facilities from 10 to 15 by 2027.<\/p>\n

The acquisition also aligns with the company\u2019s sustainability strategy. Sumitomo Forestry intends to maximize the value of wood through cascading utilization, converting processing residues into biofuels and biorefining inputs to support green development.<\/p>\n

Industry observers note that the timing of the acquisition coincides with the implementation of the Trump administration\u2019s 2025 tariff plan, a broad tax on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China under its \u201cLiberation Day\u201d trade policy. The tariffs have disrupted supply chains, increased construction costs, and intensified the search for reliable domestic sources of timber.<\/p>\n

The investment in TJPD not only helps Sumitomo Forestry mitigate these supply chain risks but also positions the company to capitalize on growing demand for mass timber in the United States. According to the International Mass Timber Conference, as of March 2025, dozens of mass timber projects are in design or construction across the country, with California, Texas, Washington, Massachusetts, Georgia, Colorado, and New York each hosting over 50 projects.
