<\/span>Timber prices in Austria have been on a rollercoaster in recent years, and the current levels remain insufficient to offset inflation, the Forestry Association said. The sector is hoping for higher prices this summer following a season with minimal damaged wood.<\/p>\n

A solid cubic metre of good-quality timber currently costs between \u20ac110 and \u20ac120 net. Thomas \u00d6lz, managing director of the Forestry Association, said the market continues to fluctuate. \u201cIf timber prices are too high, the services of the Vorarlberg timber industry become increasingly unaffordable. If prices are too low, it is no longer profitable for forest owners,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Despite inflation eroding more than 20% of the value of money over the past three years, timber prices have not adjusted sufficiently to compensate for the loss. \u00d6lz noted that the market \u201chasn\u2019t really been affected by inflation in that sense,\u201d with timber prices continuing their cyclical ups and downs.<\/p>\n

This summer, conditions appear favourable for higher prices, largely due to weather. \u201cThere is little wild damage and limited bark beetle infestation, not just here, but across Central Europe,\u201d \u00d6lz said.<\/p>\n

Reduced supply of damaged timber is expected to support price increases, while demand for high-quality wood remains strong. \u201cWe hope to at least be able to implement these price increases,\u201d \u00d6lz added. He said he would like to see prices rise from the current \u20ac110\u2013120 per cubic metre to around \u20ac140.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
