However, reduced log shipments from New Zealand to China\u2019s large ports have added pressure on traders who are already facing difficulties selling into a market weakened by the ongoing trade tensions between China and the United States.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"695\"><strong data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"695\">Property market remains weak, limiting demand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"913\">China\u2019s real estate sector continues to struggle, with housing demand well below past peaks. China\u2019s population is shrinking, and property prices are expected to decline, which reduces demand for new homes in cities.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"1384\">\n<li data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"1009\">\n<p data-start=\"917\" data-end=\"1009\">Demand for new urban homes is forecast to remain about 75% lower than the peak seen in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1181\">\n<p data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1181\">Annual demand for new residential properties in cities will likely stay just under 5 million units over the next several years, compared to a peak of 20 million in 2017.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1384\">\n<p data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1384\">Over the next decade, the number of new homes needed in cities is expected to fall from an average of 9.4 million units per year in the 2010s to about 4.1 million units annually between 2025 and 2030.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1750\">China\u2019s National Bureau of Statistics reported that in May 2025, new-home prices in 70 cities declined 0.22%, the largest drop in seven months. Prices for used homes fell 0.5%, the biggest fall in eight months. Residential sales by value were down 6.1% compared with the previous year, while investment in real estate fell 12%, the sharpest decline since December.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"1941\">Chinese Premier Li Qiang has promised measures to stabilize the real estate market. Analysts expect the decline in property activities to continue in 2025 but at a slower pace than in 2024.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"2145\">Data from Bloomberg Economics shows that as of May 2025, it would take about 5.24 years to sell off the unsold floor space in China, slightly better than 5.26 years in April but still near record highs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2204\"><strong data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2204\">Softwood log imports fall but supplier rankings shift<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2367\">From January to May 2025, China imported 10.14 million cubic meters of softwood logs, down 10.9% compared to the same period in 2024. The largest suppliers were:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2772\">\n<li data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2464\">\n<p data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2464\">New Zealand, supplying 7.55 million cubic meters (down 4.9%), making up 75% of total imports.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2506\">\n<p data-start=\"2467\" data-end=\"2506\">Japan, 729,000 cubic meters (up 28.6%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2507\" data-end=\"2548\">\n<p data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2548\">Canada, 511,000 cubic meters (up 5.1%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2549\" data-end=\"2596\">\n<p data-start=\"2551\" data-end=\"2596\">Australia, 218,000 cubic meters (down 15.6%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2642\">\n<p data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2642\">Germany, 215,000 cubic meters (down 60.7%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2643\" data-end=\"2687\">\n<p data-start=\"2645\" data-end=\"2687\">Poland, 192,000 cubic meters (down 49.6%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2688\" data-end=\"2730\">\n<p data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"2730\">Latvia, 187,000 cubic meters (up 45.3%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2731\" data-end=\"2772\">\n<p data-start=\"2733\" data-end=\"2772\">USA, 136,000 cubic meters (down 73.6%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2774\" data-end=\"2860\">Japan has been the second largest supplier of softwood logs to China since April 2024.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2862\" data-end=\"3162\">Exports of softwood logs from the USA to China dropped to zero after China banned imports from March 4, 2025. The ban was officially due to concerns over quarantine pests like bark beetles and longhorn beetles found in shipments, but it also reflects ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3164\" data-end=\"3204\"><strong data-start=\"3164\" data-end=\"3204\">Softwood lumber imports also decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3206\" data-end=\"3386\">Softwood lumber imports into China for the first five months of 2025 fell 15.7% to 6.28 million cubic meters compared to the same period in 2024. The main supplying countries were:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3388\" data-end=\"3882\">\n<li data-start=\"3388\" data-end=\"3480\">\n<p data-start=\"3390\" data-end=\"3480\">Russia, 4.37 million cubic meters (down 8.4%), accounting for nearly 70% of total imports.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3481\" data-end=\"3526\">\n<p data-start=\"3483\" data-end=\"3526\">Belarus, 471,000 cubic meters (down 10.1%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3527\" data-end=\"3571\">\n<p data-start=\"3529\" data-end=\"3571\">Canada, 435,000 cubic meters (down 25.4%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3572\" data-end=\"3616\">\n<p data-start=\"3574\" data-end=\"3616\">Sweden, 201,000 cubic meters (down 26.3%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3662\">\n<p data-start=\"3619\" data-end=\"3662\">Finland, 162,000 cubic meters (down 51.0%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3663\" data-end=\"3706\">\n<p data-start=\"3665\" data-end=\"3706\">Brazil, 104,000 cubic meters (unchanged).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3707\" data-end=\"3749\">\n<p data-start=\"3709\" data-end=\"3749\">Chile, 93,000 cubic meters (down 29.7%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3750\" data-end=\"3796\">\n<p data-start=\"3752\" data-end=\"3796\">New Zealand, 83,000 cubic meters (up 32.6%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3797\" data-end=\"3841\">\n<p data-start=\"3799\" data-end=\"3841\">Germany, 74,000 cubic meters (down 72.8%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3842\" data-end=\"3882\">\n<p data-start=\"3844\" data-end=\"3882\">USA, 71,000 cubic meters (down 22.8%).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3884\" data-end=\"3977\">Since April 2025, Belarus has become the second largest supplier of softwood lumber to China.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s demand for softwood logs has likely reached its lowest point, with expectations that buying activity will increase in the coming months.
