<\/span>At the end of last year, 13 employees at Balungstrand sawmill in Dalarna, previously owned by the bankrupt German company Ziegler Group, were laid off. Now, five more workers will be laid off because the market situation remains uncertain.<\/p>\n

With these new layoffs, about half of Balungstrand\u2019s staff have received layoff notices.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Balungstrand and the nearby B\u00e4ckebron sawmills were bought by Profura AB after Ziegler Group went bankrupt. Just before the ownership change, 13 employees at Balungstrand were laid off. Now the company has to reduce staff further.<\/p>\n

Stefan Gillberg, CEO of Balungstrand sawmill, says the situation is tough for everyone but is still hopeful about the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have laid off five people as a precaution because we don\u2019t know how the market will develop this autumn and winter. The employees who remain have long notice periods of five to six months,\u201d Gillberg told NTT Woodnet.<\/p>\n

He says it is hard to predict what will happen next.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole industry is in a slump. Demand for raw materials is high and prices are at record levels. But sales are slow worldwide because of economic uncertainty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Andreas Wahl\u00e9n, chairman of the local GS Union, shared his view on the layoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a lot of timber available, so prices are not going up. When house factories and private home building slow down, it affects us. But when the market improves, things can turn quickly. We just have to hang on,\u201d he told Dagens Arbete.<\/p>\n

Balungstrand currently processes about 80,000 cubic meters of lumber each year. Around half is sold in Sweden and the rest is exported mainly to Europe.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
