Combined with the <strong data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"568\">20.56%<\/strong> anti-dumping duties announced weeks earlier, most Canadian softwood lumber now faces a <strong data-start=\"656\" data-end=\"666\">35.19%<\/strong> combined rate at the border.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"987\">Some companies will see steeper rates. Canfor Corporation faces a combined <strong data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"784\">41.67%<\/strong>, West Fraser Mills will pay <strong data-start=\"813\" data-end=\"823\">16.50%<\/strong>, while most other exporters fall under the \u201cAll Others\u201d category at <strong data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"902\">27.30%<\/strong>. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has already begun collecting at the new rates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1454\"><strong data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1029\">Ottawa responds with support package<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1454\">Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a <strong data-start=\"1080\" data-end=\"1097\">C$1.2 billion<\/strong> aid package for the sector, including <strong data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1153\">C$700 million<\/strong> in loan guarantees and <strong data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1194\">C$500 million<\/strong> for product innovation and market diversification. British Columbia\u2019s Minister of Forests, Ravi Parmar, called the duties \u201cabsurd and reckless,\u201d while the BC Council of Forest Industries warned the measures will harm communities on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1456\" data-end=\"1601\">The BC Lumber Trade Council said the tariffs will drive up U.S. construction costs, adding to pressure on forestry-dependent regions in Canada.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"2016\"><strong data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1640\">U.S. industry backs higher duties<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"2016\">The U.S. Lumber Coalition welcomed the decision, with Executive Director Zoltan van Heyningen saying Canadian producers have long benefited from unfair subsidies. The coalition said domestic mills have expanded capacity by <strong data-start=\"1866\" data-end=\"1892\">8.8 billion board feet<\/strong> since 2016, producing an additional <strong data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"1954\">30 billion board feet<\/strong> of lumber \u2014 enough for two million new single-family homes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2319\"><strong data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2068\">More tariffs possible under Section 232 review<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2319\">An ongoing Section 232 investigation launched by former President Trump could impose further tariffs if lumber imports are deemed a national security risk. Such measures would be separate from the USMCA and handled under global trade remedy laws.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2321\" data-end=\"2498\">The dispute, rooted in U.S. claims that Canadian government ownership of forests amounts to unfair subsidization, has persisted since the 1980s. Canada rejects the allegation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2785\"><strong data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2530\">Canada shifts market focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2785\">Canada has reduced its reliance on the U.S. market, with the share of exports heading south falling from <strong data-start=\"2638\" data-end=\"2652\">78% to 68%<\/strong> in the past year. The government is targeting sales in Europe and Asia, while encouraging greater domestic use of Canadian lumber.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"3019\">For U.S. homebuilders, the stakes are high.
