<\/span>Interfor Corporation reported a return to profitability in the second quarter of 2025, posting net earnings of $11.1 million after losses in previous quarters. The company\u2019s strong lumber shipments of 978 million board feet exceeded production by 5%, resulting in a 37 million board feet reduction in inventory.<\/p>\n

Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was $17.2 million on sales of $780.5 million. The average selling price declined to $684 per thousand board feet (mfbm), down $28 from the prior quarter, largely reflecting a 3.5% appreciation of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar. Operating cash flow was robust at $84.9 million, supported by a $60.5 million decrease in working capital due to targeted inventory reductions of logs and lumber.<\/p>\n

Interfor improved its financial position with net debt falling to $798 million, or 35.6% of invested capital, compared to $886.3 million and 37.3% in Q1 2025. During the quarter, the company completed the sale of Coastal British Columbia forest tenures for $8.2 million and ended June with 736,000 cubic meters of allowable annual cut available for disposition. Capital expenditures totaled $23.6 million, focusing on projects including the sawmill rebuild in Thomaston, Georgia, with full-year spending forecast between $85 million and $95 million.<\/p>\n

The company recorded $36.2 million in duties expenses at a combined rate of 14.4% on Canadian shipments to the U.S., with cumulative duties paid reaching $621.5 million by the end of Q2. The U.S. Department of Commerce recently set a final anti-dumping duty rate of 20.56%, which is expected to add approximately $100 million in expenses in Q3 2025.<\/p>\n

Despite the implementation of a 35% reciprocal tariff on Canadian goods starting August 1, Interfor noted that lumber exports compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain exempt, and current Canadian lumber shipments to the U.S. are not impacted. The company is monitoring an ongoing Section 232 investigation into lumber imports, which may influence future trade conditions.<\/p>\n

Interfor anticipates ongoing market volatility in North American lumber markets driven by evolving economic policies, tariffs, labor shortages, and trade uncertainties.
