This represents a significant increase of 400 NOK (approx. €33.69) per cubic meter compared to the same period in 2021. This price surge has led to a boom in the sector, with total timber sales from Norwegian forestry increasing every year since 2021. In the first half of 2025 alone, the total volume of timber measured in Norway grew by 9.2% year-on-year, with AT Skog's volume rising by an impressive 12.2%.

Despite the robust supply, the market is beginning to feel the effects of low construction activity across Europe over the past two years. This slowdown is tied mostly to economic difficulties, including high inflation and elevated interest rates, which have reduced consumer and business confidence. Sawmills had been operating with the expectation that falling interest rates and a growing housing shortage would soon stimulate a new wave of construction. However, that growth has not materialized this summer.

This mismatch between high raw material costs and weak demand is causing many sawmills to reduce production. For the first time in a while, sawmills are well-stocked with timber, and some have even temporarily halted deliveries during the summer months.

The most immediate impact of this more balanced market is on the demand for pine logs. With an adequate supply of spruce —the most sought-after timber in the lumber market—there is now a surplus of pine. As a result, prices for pine are seeing the most significant decline. The situation for spruce is more stable, but a dramatic increase in beetle damage has been noted.

The market for pulpwood began to weaken slightly in the second quarter of the year. There is an abundance of timber and wood chips in the market, and inventories of finished cellulose products are growing. This has led several major cellulose producers to reduce production in response to the end-market conditions.

After a period of continuous price increases, the timber market is becoming less favorable for Norwegian forest owners..
