The shutdown affects the company’s sawing plant and forestry operations starting August 4, with logging operations to follow from August 18. Over 250 jobs are directly impacted. Operations are expected to resume no earlier than October 13, 2025.

The company cited the recent hike in U.S. countervailing and anti-dumping duties—now totaling more than 34.45%—as a primary reason for the halt. These trade measures, imposed by the U.S. Department of Commerce, significantly raise the cost of exporting Canadian lumber to the United States, a key market for many producers. Management stated that the new duty rates make continued operations economically unsustainable under current conditions.

In addition to trade-related challenges, Scierie St-Michel pointed to unresolved issues concerning Indigenous territorial claims in the region, particularly those raised by the Manawan Atikamekw community. The company says the lack of a long-term agreement has created a situation where forest operations cannot be reliably planned beyond a few months at a time. This, according to President and Managing Director Jean-François Champoux, has undermined the efficiency and predictability required for profitable operations.

Champoux urged the Quebec government to take a more active role in clarifying industry rights related to forest harvesting and to establish clear frameworks for collaboration with First Nations. He emphasized that the current uncertainty is placing additional pressure on operations in southern parts of the territory, further complicating the company’s ability to maintain stable wood supply chains.

While the shutdown is officially labeled as temporary, company leadership indicated that a long-term pause cannot be ruled out if key structural issues remain unresolved. The company is awaiting clarity on U.S. trade policy, progress on the modernization of Quebec’s forestry regime through Bill 97, and the development of formal guidelines for Indigenous participation in forestry planning.

Scierie St-Michel, a major sawmill operation in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, has announced the temporary suspension of its activities due to rising financial pressure linked to increased U.S. softwood lumber tariffs and ongoing regulatory uncertainty surrounding forest access.
