<\/span>The Polish Chamber of Commerce of the Timber Industry (PIGPD) has urged the government to amend phytosanitary regulations for roundwood exports, warning of mounting risks to domestic supply and economic security due to insufficient oversight and outdated fumigation standards.<\/p>\n

In a formal appeal to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Chamber said tighter rules are needed to align with international standards and prevent environmental and market disruptions caused by rising exports of untreated raw wood, particularly to Asia.<\/p>\n

PIGPD\u2019s call comes amid concerns over the effectiveness of current fumigation practices and phytosanitary certification. Inspections carried out earlier this year by the General Inspectorate of Plant Health and Seed Inspection revealed inconsistencies in fumigation procedures and prompted a proposal to tighten requirements. However, the Chamber said no final decisions have been made.<\/p>\n

The proposed changes would standardise treatment parameters such as chemical concentration, temperature, and exposure time. The Chamber argues that such steps would help counteract unfair competition, ensure international compliance, and stem mass exports of unprocessed wood from Poland.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s new roundwood fumigation rules, effective June 1, are cited as a benchmark. The regulation mandates clear documentation of fumigant dispersion and temperature during treatment, after the EU permit for methyl bromide expired and sulfuryl fluoride was deemed ineffective at lower temperatures. Similar restrictions have been introduced in the Netherlands, which stopped issuing phytosanitary certificates for roundwood treated with sulfuryl fluoride as of Jan. 1.<\/p>\n

PIGPD warned that without comparable measures, Poland could face increased demand from importers seeking to bypass stricter German rules, potentially destabilising the local market and depleting raw material needed by domestic processors.<\/p>\n
