Imports of unprocessed logs came to only 46 cubic metres – effectively zero – after Chinese authorities suspended log shipments from the U.S. in March arguing the detection of quarantine pests.

For the first half of 2025, China’s total wood imports from the U.S. declined 46.8% year-on-year to 912,700 cubic metres, with import value falling 33.4% to $531 million. Average import prices, however, rose 25.3% during the period.

The suspension of log imports and broader tariffs have widened the decline. China’s total wood trade with the U.S. fell 71.7% in Q2 from a year earlier, compared to a 9.06% drop in Q1. U.S. log exports to China shrank 90.4% year-on-year in Q2, from a 17.2% decline in Q1.

The downturn comes despite a temporary 90-day extension of tariff suspensions agreed during China-U.S. trade talks held in Stockholm on July 28–29. U.S. exports to China had already fallen 9.9% in H1, while Chinese imports from the U.S. dropped 7.7%, reversing gains earlier in the year.

U.S. timber producers, particularly those in Missouri and Alaska, have been hit hard. Missouri, where around 60% of wood exports rely on the Chinese market, now faces excess inventory and potential closures of over 30% of wood businesses within the next year. Smaller operators are most at risk.

In Alaska, the municipality of Haines has been forced to shelve a major spring timber sales initiative – the largest in nearly five decades – due to the disruption. Eric Nichols, Vice President of the Alaska Forest Association, said efforts to redirect volumes to other markets have so far proved costly and inefficient.

NWFP, a major exporter, is continuing to seek alternative buyers but faces slow progress. Canada’s Transpac Group has also scaled back operations after China’s import ban halted shipments from its Afognak Island site off Kodiak Island in March.

Analysts expect prolonged disruptions in U.S. log exports to Asia unless phytosanitary concerns are resolved and stable trade conditions return.

China’s imports of U.S. wood fell by over 90% year-on-year in June, with log shipments virtually collapsing, as phytosanitary restrictions and renewed bilateral trade tensions reshape global timber flows.
