<\/span>Brazilian timber exporters are rushing to ship hundreds of containers to the United States before August 6, when a new 50% tariff on plywood and lumber imports is set to take effect. The last-minute surge comes as industry groups warn the measure could severely disrupt trade, cut jobs, and force plant closures across Brazil\u2019s wood processing sector.<\/p>\n

The U.S. tariff, announced under a presidential order, includes a 40% ad-valorem duty that will apply to a broad range of processed wood products from Brazil starting August 6, in addition to an existing 10% tariff introduced earlier under Executive Order 14257.<\/p>\n

According to Brazil\u2019s Association of Mechanically Processed Timber Industry (Abimci), companies are working against the clock to load, dispatch, and clear containers before the deadline. Only goods shipped before August 6 and entered into U.S. customs by October 5 will be exempt from the additional 40% duty, provided they were already in transit at the time the tariff enters into force.<\/p>\n

From January to June 2025, Brazil\u2019s plywood exports to the U.S. rose 13% year-on-year to 487,000 m\u00b3, with a value increase of 6% to $161.5 million. During the same period, lumber exports increased 21% to 587,000 m\u00b3, while the total value climbed 18% to $155.8 million.<\/p>\n

Despite this growth, the new tariffs could sharply reduce Brazil\u2019s market share in the United States. \u201cThe industry is already seeing suspended shipments, cancelled contracts, and halted production,\u201d Abimci said in a statement. \u201cWe estimate that around 1,400 containers are currently en route, with another 1,100 still stuck in Brazilian ports.\u201d<\/p>\n

The association said that production cuts are being implemented across most companies, with some operations temporarily shut down. In several cases, workers have been placed on mandatory leave, while others face layoffs if the situation worsens.<\/p>\n

The United States accounted for approximately $1.6 billion in Brazilian wood product exports in 2024, representing around 50% of the country\u2019s total export volume. Most of the production is concentrated in Brazil\u2019s southern states, where the timber industry directly employs about 180,000 people.<\/p>\n

Abimci has urged the Brazilian government to take immediate steps, including formal diplomatic outreach to Washington, a request to extend the implementation deadline, and a recommendation to avoid retaliatory tariffs that could escalate the dispute.<\/p>\n

Some wood products, including tropical sawnwood and various pulp grades under HS codes 44 to 48, will remain exempt from the new 40% duty and continue to face only the existing 10% tariff. But these exemptions do not cover the higher-value and processed goods that make up a large share of Brazil\u2019s exports to the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout urgent action, we risk losing long-standing customers, dismantling production lines, and pushing the industry into a deeper crisis,\u201d Abimci said.<\/p>\n

Further clarification on enforcement, exemptions, and possible adjustments to the tariff regime is expected from U.S. authorities in the coming weeks.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
