The company highlighted that ongoing economic uncertainty, housing affordability issues, low consumer confidence, and tariff-related concerns are expected to suppress demand and pressure prices in the near term.

Despite these challenges, Canfor expects lumber prices—especially for Western spruce, pine, and fir—to gradually improve later in the third quarter. This anticipated recovery is partly driven by producers seeking to offset higher import duties scheduled to take effect in August.

During the second quarter, North America’s housing market experienced a moderate downturn. Canfor cited persistent affordability issues combined with broader economic and political uncertainties, particularly fears of potential U.S. tariffs, as key factors dampening demand and slowing market activity.

This environment has led to a rise in housing inventory levels, alongside declines in both new home construction and repair and remodeling activities. Consequently, benchmark lumber prices in North America fell compared to the previous quarter.

On the export front, Canfor expects lumber prices in Japan to decline modestly in Q3 as the backlog in housing construction eases. Meanwhile, lumber markets in China are likely to remain under pressure due to ongoing weak demand.

European lumber markets face continued pricing challenges as affordability remains a concern and consumers remain cautious. This is expected to keep demand subdued throughout the quarter.

In the United Kingdom, prices are anticipated to stay relatively low, influenced in part by lumber stocks redirected from the Middle East and North Africa region, increasing supply in the local market.

Canfor Corp. projects that lumber demand in North America will continue to be relatively weak throughout the third quarter of 2025.
