<\/span>The European Union and the United States have reached a provisional settlement in their months-long trade dispute, agreeing to a broad 15% tariff on most EU-manufactured goods entering the US market. While the deal has been welcomed as a de-escalation, questions remain over its implications for the European wood industry \u2014 particularly exporters of softwood lumber, engineered wood products, and components.<\/p>\n

According to sector sources, the new tariff regime, set to take effect in early August, could include lumber and other wood products unless clear exemptions are negotiated in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

Austrian industry analysts say the 15% rate is the default assumption across most product groups, including timber, even though some EU delegates are lobbying for zero-duty treatment on key construction-related goods. \u201cUnless explicitly stated, we must prepare for a flat 15%,\u201d one export manager said.<\/p>\n

The tariff comes at a time when the US market has been increasingly reliant on European suppliers, particularly for spruce and pine products, amid tight domestic supply and ongoing disputes with Canada. Canadian lumber already faces a total duty rate exceeding 27%, following the latest administrative reviews that pushed combined anti-dumping and countervailing duties beyond previous levels.<\/p>\n

Industry fears are compounded by the fact that US authorities have reopened a Section 232 investigation into lumber imports \u2014 a rarely used tool allowing trade restrictions on national security grounds. Such a designation could trigger further tariffs, quotas, or licensing requirements.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mood is cautious,\u201d said a spokesperson for a large Nordic sawmilling group. \u201cIf both EU and Canadian lumber face high tariffs, US buyers will see fewer options and higher prices in the second half of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the average unit value of EU lumber exports to the US remains competitive, the 15% tariff could erode margins for both exporters and American importers. European manufacturers may need to reallocate volumes toward the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia if the US market becomes less viable.<\/p>\n

For now, European trade groups are pressing the Commission to secure exemptions for industrial wood products, arguing that tariffs will hurt US homebuilders, furniture makers, and infrastructure contractors already facing material cost inflation.<\/p>\n

The final list of exempted categories is expected to be published in August, though no specific timeline has been confirmed by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).<\/p>\n
