<\/span>Swedish forest group SCA reported robust performance in its Wood Division for the first half of 2025, driven by higher delivery volumes and stronger prices. However, the company cautioned that rising raw material costs and escalating trade tensions\u2014especially U.S. tariffs\u2014pose growing risks for the export-oriented industry.<\/p>\n

SCA\u2019s wood business, which includes five sawmills in Northern Sweden and processing operations in Scandinavia and France, increased its net sales by 24% in the first half of 2025 to SEK 3,231 million (approx. EUR 278 million), up from SEK 2,599 million (EUR 224 million) a year earlier. The rise was mainly attributed to both higher prices and increased delivery volumes, which rose 19% to 1.09 million m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Operating profit surged 51% to SEK 402 million (EUR 35 million), and EBITDA increased 35% to SEK 546 million (EUR 47 million), despite higher raw material costs. The EBITDA margin improved to 16.9%, compared with 15.6% in the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Q2 performance improves on Q1<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the second quarter alone, SCA\u2019s Wood Division reported net sales of SEK 1,733 million (EUR 149 million), a 15% increase year-on-year and 16% higher than in the first quarter. EBITDA for the quarter reached SEK 310 million (EUR 27 million), up from SEK 294 million (EUR 25 million) in Q2 2024 and SEK 236 million (EUR 20 million) in Q1 2025.<\/p>\n

Delivery volumes for the quarter totaled 568,000 m\u00b3, an increase of 10% compared with the same period last year. However, the company flagged that currency effects and rising costs for fiber raw materials had a dampening effect on margins.<\/p>\n

Tariffs create uncertainty<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the group expressed confidence in its operational performance, CEO Ulf Larsson raised concerns over geopolitical risks\u2014particularly U.S. tariffs on EU pulp and wood products.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a situation where European exports to the U.S. are burdened with a 10% tariff, while Canadian exports, especially pulp, are exempt. This changes the competitive conditions quite significantly,\u201d Larsson told Dagens Industri. He called on EU negotiators to secure fair conditions for the forest industry.<\/p>\n

Broader SCA performance<\/strong><\/p>\n

SCA\u2019s group-wide net sales reached SEK 5,380 million (EUR 463 million) in the second quarter, marginally higher than the SEK 5,291 million (EUR 456 million) reported in the same period of 2024. Group EBITDA exceeded SEK 2 billion (EUR 172 million), up from SEK 1.89 billion (EUR 162 million) last year.<\/p>\n
