Past trends show that too sudden and too sharp an increase in raw material prices can become difficult for the downstream sector of semi-finished or finished processed products to bear. This can then result in a significant phase of decline.

Examples show that the French forest-wood sector is no exception to this rule. In the early 2000s, beech, which had reached peaks due to Chinese enthusiasm, completely collapsed. More recently, the post-Covid surge was followed by a period of retraction that affected many species, including oak, whose prices, after having exploded, are now falling.

In the summer of 2025, is Douglas fir in France facing a comparable situation? The question deserves to be asked when we observe today the distortion between log prices and sawn timber prices. In French forests, Douglas fir is indeed experiencing a period close to euphoria. In early July in the Massif Central, at the sale of forestry expert Luc Detruy, the average prices of standing and block cuts offered exceeded the historical levels of 2021.

“I think the value of Douglas fir logs now exceeds the record levels we recorded at the end of 2021 and early spring 2022,” stated the expert. In view of the auctions of lots from private forests they organize, logs that were negotiated - all unitary volumes combined standing and in block - at an average price of 66 euros/m3 at the end of 2022 are now selling on the basis of 120 euros/m3, almost doubling prices in less than 3 years (see table 1).

This is not an isolated case. Alain Prévosto, commercial director of the CFBL cooperative, confirms the current strong demand for Douglas fir in French forests, with prices aligned with the peaks of late 2021. “At our mid-June 2025 sale, mechanized cuts with no skidding and transport difficulties were negotiated on average at 100 euros/m3 standing and in block, with the most expensive lot selling for 135 euros/m3.”

In early June 2025, the auction in Ussel (Corrèze) by Forestry France - a group of forestry experts - resulted in similar outcomes. Standing, timber from 1 to 2 m3 sold between €70/m3 and €106/m3, while in the 2 m3 and + category, a 3,000 m3 cut sold for €137/m3. Since the end of 2022, the average price increase observed during these sales exceeds 40%.

On the sawn timber side, professionals describe demand as generally satisfactory both in France and for nearby exports. However, like other species, Douglas fir operates in a very volatile and unstable global environment. “In the Benelux, the market is tightening, volumes tend to decrease, customers are there but you have to be present, constantly begging,” explained one sawmiller. For this professional, the Douglas fir market operates at two speeds.

On the one hand, the traditional framework sector, outdoor uses, and various housing beautification niches remain buoyant, which benefits larger timber. In contrast, some large players specializing in smaller canter wood for industrial products are experiencing difficulties in selling their stocks. Sawing capacities have been significantly reduced, as have wood purchases. At the same time, a shift is observed towards white softwoods, considered more profitable due to the spruce bark beetle crisis, leading to lower purchase prices.

The reality is that the evolution of sawn timber prices is not following the explosion of Douglas fir log prices. Indeed, the value of boards remains below that of late 2022 (see table 2) and the price recovery, initiated in the second half of last year, is now stalled. “Indeed, sawmillers are now finding it difficult to pass on the increase in log prices to their customers, and this 'scissor effect' can be damaging to our sector,” remarked Jean-Philippe Bazot, a forestry operator-sawmiller and president of France Douglas. However, in the long term, Bazot is not concerned, as he believes that Douglas fir has found its market and also benefits from the scarcity of fresh spruce wood.

However, neither the current economic nor geopolitical situation currently predisposes markets to dynamism and consumer confidence. Under these conditions, can Douglas fir prices in French forests still be maintained at such levels? The next sales at the start of the new season will certainly provide some answers.

Table 1: Douglas Fir Prices
